Research Assistant/Ph.D. student at The Institute for Heat and Fuel Technology at the TU Braunschweig

The Institute for Heat and Fuel Technology at the TU Braunschweig seeks a

Research Assistant/Ph.D. student (E13 TV-L, formerly BAT IIa)

in the area of nonlinear systems and network optimization under uncertainty.

The position is vacant in the Integrated Systems Group (M. Mönnigmann). Our research deals with the development and application of numerical methods for the modeling, simulation, and optimization of nonlinear dynamical systems in the areas of process, chemical, and energy systems engineering.
The position is vacant in a long-term project funded by and carried out in cooperation with E.ON, one of the major European utility companies. The goal of the project is the development of numerical methods for the economic optimization of large scale energy generation and storage networks. Particular emphasis is on the uncertainties that arise due to intermittent sources such as wind and solar energy.

Ideal candidates have

  • completed a master’s or equivalent degree in mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineering, scientific computing, applied math, or physics with a very good academic record,
  • experience in numerical methods and programming, in particular experience in numerical optimization methods such as linear, nonlinear, or integer programming are welcome,
  • interest in conducting Ph.D. research in an interdisciplinary area at the interface of engineering and scientific computing,
  • interest in teaching and advising,
  • interest in cooperation with industrial partners,
  • very good proficiency in English.

Knowledge of German is very welcome. The salary follows the German law for public institutions and is according to the standard rate TV-L E 13.
