Open PhD Position at the Goethe-University Frankfurt (Germany)

PhD Position [3 y; university degree meteorology, mathematics or a related subject; excellent computer and statistics skills; English language skills (German advantage); BAT 2a/2] / Goethe-University Frankfurt / deadline August 31

Open PhD Position at the Goethe-University Frankfurt (Germany)

We have one opening for a Doctoral (PhD) position at the Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences in the group for Mesoscale Meteorology and Climate. The positions are available for a period of 3 years with payment according to BAT 2a/2. Further information on our institute can be found on the web at www.geo.uni-frankfurt.de/iau.

Observational Precipitation Ensembles: Observational precipitation is not only an interesting evaluation parameter for atmospheric models, but also a crucial input in operational hydrological forecasting and flood risk assessment. In this project you will consider precipitation in mountainous watersheds on hourly to daily time scales. The main scientific questions are (a) how to realize ensembles of precipitation fields based on observations (rain gauge, weather radar etc.) in combination with conceptual models, (b) how to probabilistically interpret these observational reference ensembles (e.g. in NWP model evaluation), and (c) how to apply these ensembles efficiently in coupled meteorological/hydrological forecast systems? The candidate will also be involved in the implementation of the Institute’s Taunus MesoNet.

The requirements for this position are: University degree in meteorology, mathematics or a related subject; excellent computer and statistics skills; English language skills (German is of advantage but not required); and good communication skills. For more information, please contact Bodo.Ahrens@iau.uni-frankfurt.de (tel: +49 69 798 40244). Consideration of applications will start on July 15, 2008 [extended to August 31, 2008], and will continue until the position is filled. If you are interested in any of these positions, please submit your CV and further information (e.g. list of publications) per e-mail as a single pdf-file attachment to: Steffen Kothe, kothe@iau.uni-frankfurt.de .

The Goethe-University is determined to increase the number of female researchers. Therefore, applications from qualified women are strongly encouraged. In addition, the Goethe-University is an equal-opportunity employer and in case of candidates with equal qualifications and aptitude, preference will be given to handicapped applicants.
